History
ULM Universal Love Ministries (ULM) foundation is
rooted in experience of its founder Turinawe Samson who ministered in a
Pentecostal church from which he was expelled and banned from attending church
services or performing any other religious duties in neighborhood Christian
churches -western Uganda. His expulsion came as a result of his preaching
against discrimination of people who are homosexuals, co-habiting or having sex
before marriage. He opposed the proposal by the church leaders that included;
(1) women to sit down on mats not in chairs as men (2) mature single and
persons in marriages with no children not to minister in the church (3)
children born out of wed lock not to be dedicated/ baptized in the church (4)
ban on LGBTI persons and their allies from church community.
Later Samson initiated the start up of Universal Love
Ministries (ULM) which would opens up a dialogue as far as ending violence against
women, children and LGBTI persons and to prepare the society to confront the
effects of patriarchy, religious fundamentalism and extremism and pseudo
African cultural beliefs, and act as change agent and advocate against gender
based conflicts in Uganda by use of a nonviolent approach. Universal Love
Ministries was welcomed and joined by other social justice minded persons.
Amidst the hard-hitting challenges in Uganda; persecution and stigmatization of
our staff, limited resources, passing of anti-LGBTI bill which was later
watered down, Universal Love Ministries has persistently stood with children,
women and LGBTI persons and all other minority groups.
Vision: To have our community free from discrimination based
on religion, race, sexual orientation and gender identity.
Mission: To raise consciousness through spirituality,
education and community building, bringing healing to people who are
marginalized based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Universal Love
Ministries aims at creating an equal opportunity, inclusive & more
sustainable society in Uganda. ULM is set to implement its strategic plan with
the goal of social justice for children, women and LGBTI persons in Uganda.
While collaborating with other community partners to enhance
the abilities of individuals, families and institutions to promote and sustain
communities free from gender based violence.
